Printing Your Photographs - Why You Should
I was at the shops one day looking at the dvd section for a movie. Standing near me was a mother and child. The kid was trying to decide between two movies and was taking her time. The mum, clearly becoming impatient, said "just pick one of the videos and let's go".
Sounds normal, right? Not a sentence that I would even register usually. But what did register is what the kid said next...
“What’s a video?"
I was floored! I couldn't believe that this little girl didn't even know what a video was when I clearly remembered video tapes and I actually remember the beta tapes that came before them (I know, I'm old - but let's steer clear of that topic, ok).
Anyway, it wasn't until I thought about it, that I realised this little girl was absolutely right to ask "what's a video?" There have been no videos and no VCR's in this little girl's life. Technology has moved along at such a pace that she simply hasn't experienced them. In fact, soon DVD's will become obsolete. Some computers sold now don't even come with a disk drive!
It's moved from beta, to video, to dvd, to blu-ray, to usb. And what's next? I don't know but I do know that I don't want to get caught out with old technology that I can't even access anymore. Can you say mixed tape, anyone?
That’s why I sell print products. Print has outlasted all the new technology. In my lifetime we've moved from a floppy disk, to a hard disk, to a cd and it's now a usb and the cloud to keep all our files saved. And in all that time printed photos, albums and large wall pieces have withstood the test of time. People still buy them, not just because they last but because of the emotional connection you feel as you see and touch a printed product as opposed to viewing your photos on a computer.
Every time you open your front door and see the large canvas grouping of your dog, grinning from above your lounge, or hanging in your entrance hall, you too grin. It’s a visceral reaction when you view a photograph. Suddenly you’re back in that moment, experiencing the day you had again and it makes you just as happy remembering the memory as you were creating it.
You get to enjoy that feeling everytime you stand in your living room and see your artwork, or curled up in bed flicking through your beautiful album that tells the story of the day. You can see it, touch it and relive it constantly. And who doesn’t want to be happy when they come home after a long day at work?
Now you may do that with your usb of images. You may open up your computer and look through your images and get that same feeling and if you do that's great. Art should be appreciated in all it's various forms.
But I bet that the majority of you are just like I used to be. You get the images and you love them. You look at them when you get them, you show your friends and ooh and ahh over them. You may post them to Facebook or Instagram and get lots of likes. It feels good and you're on a happy high for a few days. You may even think to yourself, "I really like this photo, I'll get it printed when I get a chance".
But then life happens. Work happens. Friends happen. Family happen. And before you know it, that usb of photos that you love so much is shoved to the back of a drawer. Forgotten. Left in the dark.
And all those photos you love? Well... they're just getting dusty. But hopefully you'll remember to save them to whatever new technology comes along so they aren't lost forever...
I don't want that to be you. I want you to experience your pet's love everyday.
